Northern Lights

I made this wall hanging when I came home from working in Yellowknife.
I went out onto the tundra one night with a group of Japanese Tourists. They believe the Northern Lights are the spirits of their ancestors sending them messages a belief that got stronger as the night progressed with countless visits to a handy tent serving saki shots.
It was surreal laying in my back in the snow wearing s bulky snow suit

I made this huge quilt/wall hanging for the 50th wedding anniversary of a couple in Yorkshire England. The centre is their wedding picture. Their children and their weddings are photo transfer. As they were farmers animals and field grasses were added. Their son was a well-known show jumper which is represented by winners ribbons stitched to the top corners.

I call this quilt “Birds of a Feather”. It was custom made for an ardent bird watcher in the UK. Sometimes you don’t need fancy stitches. Just let the fabric stand out on its own
A trip around the world
We call this pattern “Churn Dash” but historically it was called Monkey Wrench and was part of secret code in slave quilts. The Monkey Wrench is thought to have been the Blacksmith who because he was free to travel the area would have local knowledge that would be useful to members of the “Underground Railroad” Quilts were often used as notice boards to assist escaping slaves. Slavery was abolished in1865 with great help from Sir William Wilberforce from Hull Yorkshire UK. My home town where his home is now a museum and where the logs of sailing ships who carried the slaves make for interesting reading.

This customer wanted every colour she saw in her fall garden reproduced in maple leaves.
The technique is reverse appliqué. The leaf shapes were cut out from the top fabric and the coloured fabric stitched behind the “holes”.

I saved all the pieces I cut out and many months later made another quilt using a regular appliqué technique.

This quilt is an appliqué using the maple leaves that I cut out to make the quilt above. I never discard any piece of fabric no matter how small! It took me two years to get around to using these leaves but the result was worth the wait

I am not a lover of quilts made of jeans. I find them very heavy and rather uninspiring. This was a compromise for a customer.
The customer was not sure if the boy would prefer cats or dogs on his quilt so I did both.

Hilary loved her flower garden. This quilt was donated to a fundraising auction in her memory
Mum saved her daughters clothes from the first 8 years of her life. Only giving them up when Dad insisted. I saved the logos and decorative parts and every single garment was represented in this single bed quilt.
I bought this fabric while in Hawaii and it lingered in my “stash” for quite a while. Finally made it into a wedding gift for a dear friends’ son
A great way to use up scraps. Can also be made from used clothes.
A request for a purple and brown quilt sounded boring but the shading of different brown fabrics created a more interesting bed quilt on this custom order.
I love the ocean with its ever-changing moods and colours. This lap quilt can also be a wall hanging.
Panels make a nice feature in the centre of a bed quilt. The sea theme is continued with the dolphins in the centre of the woven ribbon blocks

A traditional but well-loved design. Custom made for a client.
I had a craze for making windmill blocks using up small pieces of fabric and wound up with a huge stash of them. Hated to see them go to waste so I sorted and assembled them into several quilts and wall hangings. This one now hangs in the home of one of the stars in “the Lion King” stage show.
bed of roses All the fabrics have roses on them and it’s a colour wash.  Light at the top, dark at the bottom.  If you have a favourite flower let me make a wall hanging or quilt for you.

At very short notice I made this scrap quilt for my grandson Liam.
I made it special by randomly hiding photo transfer pictures of him in crazy moments.  It kept him occupied hunting for them when he was sick in bed with the flu!
